An Experience of 20 Hair-Pin bends of Yercaud from girish's blog

About Yercaud:

Yercaud is a small and a beautiful hill station in Salem District, in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats, the Yercaud hill area is called the Shevaroy Hills. It is situated at an altitude of 4970 ft above sea level, and the highest point in Yercaud is the Servarayan temple, at 5326 ft It is so named owing to the abundance of trees categorized as a forest near the lake, the name signifying Lake Forest. As a popular tourist destination, Yercaud is also called as Jewel of the South. Yercaud is connected to the city of Salem, Tamil Nadu through a Highway of 28 km. The temperature never rises above 29 °C (84 °F) or goes below 13 °C (55 °F)

A soulful drive to Yercaud

This was my second visit to Yercaud, but this time I decided to drive alone, Yercaud is a brilliant place to visit in winter because you get to experience the coffee bushes blooming in the month of March and April which offer a fabulous view. The climate is very pleasant throughout the year.

I started my journey from Bangalore on 20.March.2015 around 10:00 PM, it’s around 222 KMS from Bangalore ->Via Hosur -> Krishnagiri -> Dharmapuri -> Salem -> Yercaud. The roads from Hosur are comparatively good which make the drive easier.

If you are too choosy on eaters you can stop by for a quick bite in Sri Krishna Inn, Coffee Day or Mc Donald’s which is located just before Krishnagiri “HPCL Fuel Station Shoolgiri Highway, Bangalore to Chennai Highway, Hosur Krishnagiri Road, NH7, Shoolagiri. You can stop over here to freshen up the Restrooms are clean and hygiene.

From Salem it’s around 32 Kms to Yercaud, You will experience the drive-thru in between lush green coffee plantations and scenic view of Eastern Ghats. One should really experience is the 20 Hair pin bends of Yercaud.

I reached Yercaud around 3:30 AM, it took around 5.5 hours to reach Yercaud, (including multiple breaks)

I checked in at GRT Nature Trails Resorts, which is located exactly on 20th Hairpin Bend, This resort is an expensive side but it’s one of the best resorts in Yercaud. This offers you Swimming pool, Gym, Parking, Bar and Restaurant.

Yercaud doesn’t offer much to do, you can visit these places mentioned below. I would recommend just ahead out and explore the hill station at our best.

Things do –

  • Kiliyur Waterfall - A 90- foot waterfall

  • Pagoda / Pyramid Point and also referred as Gents Seat – Amazing sunrise and sunset clicks for the eager eyes. Tourists love the place for the vantage view of the Salem city.

  • Ladies Seat - This gives a panoramic view of the Salem city

  • Yercaud Lake - Surrounded by gardens and well-wooded trees and small shops

  • The Servaroyan Temple - Situated atop Servaroyan hill, the annual festival of Lord Servaroyan is celebrated in May every year

  • Silk Farm – Near Ladies Seat

  • Bear Cave

  • Montfort School.

I really liked this place called has “The Pear tree cafe” next to Montfort school. It’s an old house converted as a cafe. Someone who likes to read can just hang around in this cafe.

There are few shops just behind Montfort School, you can buy homemade chocolates, coffee beans or coffee powder, and they do sell perfumes which are manufactured locally.

I would like to conclude with Thumbs up to Yercaud. Overall it was a pleasant experience and Yercaud is best place to rejuvenate yourself and just sit back enjoy the nature and just laze around. If you are looking for a short trip from Bangalore its best place to be and it’s going to be a pocket friendly as well.
